Anti-heroes have become pretty common and typical in this day and age weather in comics, graphic novels, movies, video games, or any form of media. Sure they may not be able to hold a code of honor till the end, but doesn't that make them more human that way? Isn't that better than the mary-sue or the goody-goody hero? From Top to Bottom are my favorite anti-heroes who I hope that you guys can come to love as much as me.

.) Al Simmons aka Spawn: Todd McFarlane's hell forged protagonist will forever be my standard for any anti-hero weather it be western or eastern media; you can't get any better than Spawn. When you're assassinated for trying to develop a sense of morality to prevent yourself from becoming a killing machine, come back from the grave 2 years later finding your wife married to your best friend who gave her a kid when you couldn't, cursed with powers you didn't ask for, have no memory of your past, and are ordered to do the demon lord of the 8th Level of Hell's dirty work you have every right to be pissed. Al Simmons is an amazing character who has evolved and developed greatly in ways that aren't always seen in other heroes. He actually learns from his mistakes and he shows his soldier side alongside his emotional side. He really makes us care for him and want to see his life take a turn for the better. He is the model anti-hero, no, he redefined and set the standard for the anti-hero. If you haven't read Spawn before, now is the perfect time with the collections being released. The character and series are unforgettable.

.) Afro Samurai:iconafrosamuraiplz:: Some people may take Afro's story as a typical anti-hero bent on revenge for his father's murder but he stands out to mean so much more simply by his character and what the story symbolizes. Afro has no desire to obtain the godly powers of the Number One Head Band, only to avenge his father who was beheaded by Justice who practically trolled him into coming after him. Knowing that, Afro still picked up the head band and kept every victim in his heart til the end; he manages to just barely hold on to his sanity while fighting his way to Justice and that takes a lot.
Going back to the metaphorical meaning of Afro, analyze this: Afro wants revenge, he wants justice for what was wronged to him, from a man named Justice. So how do we obtain justice? Do we forgive and forget or cut down anything and everything to have our tormentor dealt a painful end? And what about the man Justice? Justice is named after the one thing that everyone craves in their lives and in the world but is Justice truly a good thing? Is it doing the world good? Or is Justice a cruel gunslinger who takes what it wants when it wants it from anybody and everybody to hold in an iron grasp? Its really a very deep thing to think about.

.) Ragna the Bloodedge:iconragnathebloodedgeplz:: Ragna really stands out as an anti-hero. For a guy whose based off of Sol Baddguy and Vash the Stampede, he's not afraid to get his hands dirty in his quest for vengeance. And considering what he's been through, he's got every damn right to be pissed and vengeful. When some asshole turns your siblings against each other, possess your kid brother to cut off your arm and burn your home done, kidnap your little sister and make her an evil empress, all while trolling you and taking more away from you as you get older, that is a lot for just one guy to carry alone. Worst of all, after years of training, rather than be reunited with your brother in open arms, you find him working for the organization you're trying to destroy and him ready to kill you all over again. Ragna has a lot to deal with and his selfish attitude is pretty understandable and when you consider all this its forgivable to a degree. He's not your average hardass and he's got a soft spot on him which he tries to hide solely for the purpose of not having to deal with loss again. Ragna is tough mentally and in an anti-hero that's pretty essential considering that they typically come out of the worst tragedies with the biggest emotional problems.

.) Daniel Kilgore aka Haunt: Todd MacFarlane has done it again with an amazing anti-hero. Daniel is a less than saintly priest but he's got a good head on his shoulders and a good heart. When you're older brother takes the love of your life away and lives a life of lies, deception, and killing its hard to even look that kind of person in the eyes ever again. But when Kurt died, Daniel somehow manages to deal with his brother's ghostly return and admit that a part of him misses him rather than having an exorcism remove Kurt's spirit. For Daniel to pick up his brother's line of work, join forces with him in an ectoplasmic suit to find the ones responsible for Kurt's death is a pretty amazing feat. To rekindle a broken relationship with a sibling who stole your fiance, married her, and cheated on her several times takes a lot of heart and I respect Daniel for that. I'm waiting to watch him develop more in the Haunt series so hopefully he'll be able to stay where he is or get higher on the chart.

.) Godzilla:icongodzillaplz:: Godzilla is Japan's first and true anti-hero. Humanity has no right to live after all we've done to each other and the earth and Godzilla is a constant reminder of that. He kills and destroys as he pleases but when the earth is under invasion from other monsters bent on take over or true destruction, he takes a stand to defend the earth and unintentionally humanity as well. He was my first hero in life because even at a young age I could grasp and understand this. That's one of the many reasons why I'm still a Godzilla fan today.

.) Obidiah Horn: Obidiah is probably the perfect example of what it means to be human. He's very loving towards his fiance Sahara, he invests his money into the reintroduction of endangered and extinct species, and he and his wife work towards the rebuilding of nations in Africa. But while Horn and Sahara are probably the people either hate to love or love to hate, Horn Industries is very corrupt doing dastardly deeds out the back door all under Obidiah without Sahara's knowledge. Obidiah's industry is responsible for a number of crimes all which he keeps covered up. Most people would say that he's a monster who is no way human for what he does but ask yourself this: aren't human beings responsible for the same crimes? Humans aren't exactly the sweetest species on earth and to be human doesn't mean to be perfect. Obidiah has come out of a life where only the strong survived and his company is a reflection of that. He's a great example of the human condition and what sides we have in us.

.) Alex Mercer:iconalexmercerplz: When you wake up in a morgue and given powers you don't understand with no memory of your past life, you feel pretty used and have every right to be pissed. Alex Mercer lost everything and the people who ruined his life turned him into a monster at the end of it all. He's more of a reflection of the modern anti-hero being narcissistic, evasive, self-centered when it comes to his problems but he has redeeming qualities too. He may be a wanted man, but he still tries his damned hardest to be the best brother he can be for his sister Dana.

.)James Howlett aka Wolverine:iconwolverineplz: Logan has endured every major war in the history of the United States, he's been surrounded by death and destruction for almost a hundred years and yet he has still tried to live a normal life and not be like an animal. Wolverine has gone through a lot of development inside and outside the X-Men comic book series and he's still around today doing the anti-hero thing. He should probably be higher on the list but the problem is I feel like I don't know him as well as the other characters above.

.)Jackie Estacado aka The Darkness: Growing in an orphanage and then adopted by your asshole uncle to do his dirty mafia business sucks. Worst part of all, the day you turn 20 you discover you're cursed with the power of the evil's essence itself and can never have sex again or else risk having your life taken away to produce the heir to The Darkness. Jackie the sex addict gangster doesn't have it easy and he tends to use his powers selfishly. But if you're his good friend then he'll be there to deal some well deserved justice. He's kind of a whiner though so he's on the lower end of this meme.

.)Shadow the Hedgehog:iconshadowthehedgehogplz:: Shadow has more powers than Sonic and he can do almost everything Sonic can do which says a lot. He lost everything that mattered but still found it in his heart to save the earth the dearest person in life loved so much. Since then, Shadow has just been hanging around, being a dick, and doing his own thing. He's been pretty well developed and Sega has done a good job in making him the anti-hero of the Sonic series. I can't really say much about him simply because I still consider him to be fairly young to the Sonic franchise both in the games and comics so I'm waiting for some more big character development moments with him.
